One-Way Boat Transfers Between Darwin and Wurrumiyanga.
Tiwi Enterprises is pleased to announce the launch of a new service offering through one of its wholly Tiwi-owned business units, Sea Darwin – Sea Tiwi: the Sea Tiwi Kapala one-way transfer service to or from Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island to Darwin.
This new service provides practical, reliable marine transport across the Beagle Gulf, supporting the growing movement of people, ideas and opportunity between the Tiwi Islands and the mainland.
Importantly, Sea Tiwi Kapala is not a scheduled ferry service. It is an opportunistic, one-way transfer that makes use of existing vessel movements. Tickets are available on a backfill basis only – that is, when a Sea Darwin – Sea Tiwi vessel is already travelling between Darwin and Wurrumiyanga for operational or charter reasons.
This service will enable locals, stakeholders, corporates and visitors to travel with a 100% Tiwi-owned company, supporting local employment, capability-building, and sustainable economic development.
About the Name – ‘Kapala’
The word Kapala comes from the Tiwi language and means “boat” – a fitting name for a service that reflects both the deep maritime connection of the Tiwi people and the purpose of this transfer offering.
Boats have always played a key role in Tiwi life – for fishing, trading, and travel. With this new service, Sea Tiwi Kapala continues that tradition in a modern context, creating access and opportunity on Tiwi terms.
Initial Departures – 2025 Tiwi Festival Weekend
Sea Tiwi Kapala will launch during one of the most important events on the Tiwi calendar: the Tiwi Festival Weekend. Two initial departures are now open for booking, with fares starting at $75:00:

Wurrumiyanga to Darwin

Darwin to Wurrumiyanga
Departure: 12:30pm | Arrival: approx. 2:30pm
These are one-way transfers only. Return tickets are not available, and bookings are on a first-come, first-served basis. Travel time is approximately 2 hours, depending on sea conditions.
