Pontoon

The Pontoons themselves are 85% made or purchased from here in the Northern Territory. Piles were bought in from Asia as Australia does not have a supplier for the pile size required. The aluminium gangways have all been Cyclone Tested to ensure the longevity of them given the Wet Season conditions that can be experienced here on the Tiwi Islands.

This project was delivered by Tiwi Enterprises in conjuction with Carey MC, both 100% indigenous owned companies. Other local businesses were used such as Bathurst Island Housing Association (BIHA) to provide services for the Welcome Centre Construction, This gave our Tiwi employees the opportunity to gain new skills and additional training as the project progressed.
The pontoon and Welcome Centre was officially opened on the 30th January 2020.

Pontoon

Much needed new development along the foreshore of Wurrumiyanga and the Paru landing. The discussions for this project date back to 2014 with Sealink, Tiwi Land Council, land owners Mantiyupwi and the Department of Chief Ministers all working together to achieve a common goal of a new pontoon for the community. Many travellers to and from the community use the Sealink Ferry service which lands foreshore. The new landing area provides a much safer environment for people using the ferry facilities.
